A workflow can combine fixed rules, AI and human judgment. The design gets better when each decision-making step explicitly explains why a particular approach is needed.
Three ways to take a step
Fixed rule
Suitable when input and outcome are predictable.
- Exact conditions
- Instantly Explainable
- Consistent result
AI Interpretation
Suitable when language, documents or context vary.
- Classify
- Consume
- Recognize Information
Human assessment
Need in doubt, exceptions or meaningful impact.
- Accept
- Review nuance
- Carrying responsibility
The Clarivo Choice Matrix
| Feature | Fixed rule | AI | Human |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imports | Structured and predictable | Variable text, image or document | Incomplete or context sensitive |
| Decision | Exactly formulated | Probability or interpretation | Standard, balancing or responsibility |
| Error Impact | Low and easily repairable | Limited by thresholds | High or difficult to repair |
| Control | Test for lines | Examples, scores and exceptions | Assessment and agreed approval |
Example: an incoming enquiry
- Rule: check that mandatory fields are present.
- AI: determine topic and make a short summary.
- Rule: router by subject and customer type.
- Human: Review commercial priority and send the final response.
Thus AI does not have to control the full workflow. The model shall only do the part for which interpretation is useful; rules and people guard the borders.
